Ordway is located in Albany, the Capital and center for government of New York State. As part of the Capital Region, also known as Tech Valley, Ordway Research Institute offers an excellent locale for raising families. In fact, in Sperling’s 2004 listing of America’s Most (and Least) Stressful cities, the Capital Region was lauded as the “least stressful large metro area.” It scores well in many categories – one of the lowest unemployment rates in the country, short average commute times, and a low overall crime rate. Recently, INC. magazine rated the Capital Region’s Tech Valley in the top 25 major metropolitan areas to do business with.
Forbes magazine ranked the Albany-Schenectady-Troy area of Tech Valley the third Best Place with the Best Education in the nation in a Feb. 2005 report. The ranking is based on factors such as local school funding, the mix of private and public schools, and student-to-teacher ratio. Meanwhile, residents of Albany, NY, live in the ninth most-educated city in the country according to Business Development Outlook Magazine (July/August 2002). Albany County has 13 public school systems with an average pupil-to-teacher ratio of 14:1. The average percentage of students continuing on to college is estimated at 80.4%. The county also boasts a number of fine private schools that provide education at the K-12 levels.
There are 21 institutions of higher learning located in the Capital Region including Union College, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), Siena College, Skidmore College, and the State University of New York at Albany. The area also has 15 licensed proprietary schools that provide training in a variety of fields.
Albany is two and a half hours from New York City; three hours from Boston and three and a half hours from Montreal, Canada. The Adirondack Mountains are one hour to the north; Catskill Mountains one hour to the south; and historic Saratoga Springs with its racetrack and natural springs is 45 minutes to the north. Saratoga is also home to Saratoga Performing Arts Center, summer home of the New York City Ballet and Philadelphia Orchestra, and an annual diverse program of popular and rock concerts. For those who prefer to enjoy the Boston Symphony, we are less than one hour from Tanglewood in Lenox, Massachusetts.
