The Genomics Institute is a collaboration between the New York State Department of Health’s Wadsworth Center and Albany Medical College.
The explosion of genetic sequence information generated by the human genome project has given scientists a new direction to study disease development and has opened up the new field of genomics.
The Genomics Institute is ready to harness the excitement of the genomic approach, which is the ability to analyze thousands of genes at one time. Using innovations in high-throughput biotechnology, scientists at the Genomics Institute will target complex scientific and medical investigations for new drug development and exploration of the etiology and diagnosis of disease.
The mission of the Genomics Institute is to promote research for better health by the discovery of genetic approaches for the understanding of mammalian development and disease. It is the Institute’s goal to ultimately design new treatment modalitites.
The Genomics Institute has forged research partnerships in the Albany area with the School of Public Health, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) and the Ordway Research Institute. Investigators from these institutes have the opportunity to use advanced instrumentation and core facilities available at the Genomics Institute. These partnerships have promoted intercollegial relationships among area scientists and have encouraged joint ventures and collaborations between institutions and the Genomics Institute.
