ORI was looking for a new site design, something that was fresh and dynamic. Using Textpattern we were able to make an easy to maintain News portal for ORI, a leader in the Biotech field in Albany. We also conducted usability studies on the website, using relevant audiences, which helped us refine the site and gave us clues on future website development.

For the photography, using flash gels and umbrellas, we were able to throw soft light on our subjects, even in the tight lab spaces. In addition to the photos posted on the website, ORI now has a collection of pharmaceutical stock photos for a fraction of the cost.

New Media Class Project

Web

December 2006

Product

  • A Real Community, A Fictitious Website
  • Interactivity using Podcast Tour, Polls & Story Contribution

Process

How do you create a different community website that keeps the residents and tourists engaged? To accomplish this our team, Vito, Dhalia and myself, first toured the neighbourhood and interviewed it’s residents to understand the product. After some brainstorming we decided on a few technologies that we would implement in the final project:

  • A Podcast Tour, allowing you to be guided through the neighbourhood using your iPod
  • A Polling Station to deal with issues of interest to the community
  • Story Sharing to review key tourist sites in the community and attract new visitors

Vog

Video

November 2006

Product

  • A Video Blog (Vog) featuring a still background, moving landscapes and interprative guitar pieces, gently woven together

Process

After filming ans assembling footage of various travel motifs, train, buses & planes, I did a few takes where I would play back the A\V footage and improvise to the sounds and tensions in the video piece while recording my performance.

My hopes with the experimentation were to extend the idea of live & improvisational performances on the internet. This specific piece was picked up by Adrian Miles of RMIT on his blog.

Identity + Web

October 2006

Product

  • Logo Design
  • Business Cards & Stationary
  • Website Development & Publication Database

Process

A startup with some creative types, we worked together to create a logo that reflected their niche business, analysis of Sigmoid Curves. Incorporating the curves with an I that resembled a greek pillar, the logo speaks for itself.

Technologies

Using Textpattern we catalogued all the publications of the staff involved with ICPD as well as posters from their presentations, making the website a reference library for other researchers in the field.

On last count, there are over 400 articles on the website. These articles can be accessed by using a boolean search feature, or by selecting an Author or Conference.

A news portal was added to the site along with a mailing list signup and contact form.

Process

The Ordway Research Institute Drug Development Center having just moved into a new clinical office was looking for an identity. We wanted something different from the stoic pharmaceutical logos in order to attract participants for clinical trials. The colors symbolize the process of converting energy (sunlight) to product (biomass), equating the drug development cycle.

The Travel Encounter

While traveling in Ecuador I became good friends with some creative types who had been working to brand a small co-operative community in the rural mountains of Ecuador. Eager to help out, I followed Jason and Vanessa to their quaint office far from civilization.

Process

Over a week I created templates for the Tourist Guide Booklet and Information Display incorporating scenery and business photos into the package.
